When working with you, I work differently to what you may have experienced in the past. The way I see it is, I believe we look at MSK pain/problems the wrong way around.
There's more than just thinking 'here's a client in pain; I need to reduce the pain and load the painful tissues around the painful site.'
I'm hungry to find information, problem solve and get to the bottom of your pain.
I understand that pain is an output of the brain and does not merely mean damage to the tissue.
When I work with you, I see it as my responsibility to educate you on what pain is and what it isn't. I won't talk in random technical language that means nothing to you. I'll explain things in a meaningful way so you understand why your body may be organising itself in this way and why you are experiencing pain, tightness, knots etc.
I understand that many things can act as stressors such as compensations still in place due to past injuries; emotional stressors; work and family issues.
I fully appreciate the importance of the diaphragm and your pelvic floors ability to lengthen and shorten in order to maintain movement - and how your emotional and lifestyle sensors may influence your movement options.
I appreciate in the same way your nociceptors (pain sensors) can become sensitised, so can your chemoreceptors (these give information on oxygen levels, carbon dioxide, ph of the blood) and as a result can affect the depth of our breathing which in turn affect the diaphragm and your pelvic floor movement. This will indirectly affect your musculoskeletal system.
When I assess you, I appreciate your dysfunctions/compensations are strategies in reaction to pain or parasympathetic dominance.
I will strive to find your true stressors no matter what body system - and will not just treat the site of the issue hopping for the best...
This means a full thorough history from you. Looking at your physical stressors, emotional and lifestyle stressors. This is vital to work out what is happening and why.
What tissues may be contributing to your pain. I won't just look at your sight of pain - I will also be looking for areas of your body that are not doing enough!
Education/treatment/movement. Help you understand and make sense in a way you have control. Understand the problem rather than just be given a diagnosis. Reassure your body there isn't a threat to the system and bring back quality pain-free movement.
Re-exposure - to make the tissue work. To re-expose, the tissues that are not doing enough, to reassure your nervous system to tolerate loading.
When we work on all this together, it's magical. Have you back at your activities pain-free, adding value to your life, your self-confidence and both resilience mentally and physically.
